Open Inbox Anonymous Answers
WTMP is hosting an Open Inbox from January 1 - March 30! Through that open inbox, we have a form that allows authors to submit anonymous questions. Question 13
As a white-passing latina, I have a question about representation. I understand the desire for characters who share identities with the author, but in multi-POV stories, does the publishing world frown upon POVs from characters of color whose experiences I don’t share? I have a 4 POV heist story I’m working on (think Six of Crows) and I don’t want to only have white latinas like myself, I also want to write Afro-Latina POVs, but im not sure if that’s frowned upon?

Question 10
I'm wondering about MG conventions regarding a novel's timeframe. Can books only take place over the course of a certain timeline--the shorter, the more engaging? Is a book involving a summer camp allowed to spill into a school year?
Question 9
When an agent says they're looking for BIPOC voices, does that include people of Asian descent? Is #ownvoices still a useful hashtag or are people moving away from it because of overuse/inappropriate usage? Are there ways to find a critique group or partner that don't involve trusting internet strangers? What is the best way to use a brief pitch session with an agent at a writing conference?

Question 5
I am someone who can never write two manuscripts in the same genre. How would you recommend querying when the MS I have prepared isn’t necessarily the genre I want to stick with for the rest of my career? Should I try to find agents who represent all of the genres I write in, or hope that a good agent would be flexible with their clients? Do I mention this in the query letter, or wait until it comes up in a call?
Question 2.5
When you get an agent, does that agent stick with you and help you with your next book? Or do you need to find a new agent for every book you publish? Does this change if your first book is YA and your second is Adult? Thank you!
