MSWL: Across the board, I’m seeking tight, lyrical prose, complex characters that must overcome significant challenges, and a plot that hinges on their personal and philosophical development. I am specifically seeking heartfelt middle grade, especially works that explore queer, neurodiverse, or disabled experiences. I’m also on the lookout for twisty young adult novels that explore societal issues or character dynamics with innovative speculative elements or story structures. My Favorite Things — Anything that comps Sarah Gailey, Kyle Lukoff, or Andrew Joseph White. Medical magic, commercial stories with literary prose, bipolar characters, Southern or Appalachian settings, and stories where the people in love can’t end up together. Not The Best Fit For — high fantasy or sci-fi or anything featuring SA.

Rowan Brighton Brown is a queer writer from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their young adult and middle grade works are represented by Rebecca Williamson at the Sheldon Fogelman Agency. They have an English degree from Smith College, were a mentee in the 2023 #PitchMe contest, and their writing has received repeated support from the National Youngarts Foundation. They spend most of their time outside exploring nature or inside exploring new worlds—especially those with Southern settings, unique magic systems, and complex characters.
